Correspondence, diaries, financial records, and subject files relating to Mr. Thompson's life and career. Correspondence covers topics such as N.D. politics, the Nonpartisan League, especially in Ransom County, Big Slough Game Refuge at Englevale, N.D., Civil Works Administration in Ransom County, bird watching and banding, and community affairs. The Alfred Thompson correspondence files deal with his son's personal life, including military service at Fort Robinson, Neb., a German prisoner of war camp, and his divorce. Other correspondents include: John M. Baer, Charles Bangert, Asle F. Gronna, Henry Helgeson, Robert La Follette, William Langer, William Lemke, Gerald P. Nye, O.A. Stevens, and Milton R. Young. His extensive "time diaries" (1914-1948) deal primarily with the world wars and politics and include his personal, skeptical views on government, its policies, and people. Personal diaries covering 1937-1948 are included. Subject files are extensive and include material on bird banding, debates, newspaper clippings, speeches, the 1948 religious garb in N.D. public school issue, campaign material, and trip notes. Also includes a student paper "M.O. Thompson, the man and his interests," by Mark Olson.
